Signer — 00-04
Perfect Location Records in partnership with the one and only Ear Candy Music gifts the world with 00-04, a compilation of works by Bevan Smith aka Signer, New Zealand’s most prominent name in ambient electronica and dub techno.
Smith has been producing emotive chords, pop ambience, and thick dub-ospheres since before the turn of the century. His output is prolific, ranging from various solo monikers (Aspen, Introverted Dancefloor) and collaborations (Skallander, Feeling Flying) to unique projects (Touching the Void soundtrack, Isolated Dreams’ 24 EPs and counting). A rare artist with indie crossover appeal thanks to the 2004 Signer album New Face of Smiling released on Carpark Records (Toro Y Moi, Beach House, Dan Deacon, Montag), Smith has played as a member of bands such as The Ruby Suns (Sub Pop), Over the Atlantic (Carpark/Involve), and Glass Vaults (JUKBOXR).
Encompassing field recordings and evoking a cloudy coastal sky, 00-04 is a collection of mostly unheard material written in the early 2000s as Smith navigated the chaos and stress of living in London just after 9/11. A portion of this release may be recognisable to those familiar with the Involve catalog––“Drone Early,” for example, is an alternative version to the dub giant “1201A”––and to those acquainted with Signer’s 2002 Low Light Dreams (Carpark/Involve), an iconic album composed of processed guitar, dub-influenced bass, and synth drones; as if that doesn’t sound appealing enough, Low Light Dreams is home to “Building Memories Without You,” an unforgettably engulfing track featured on Fact Magazine’s 25 Best Dub Techno Tracks of All Time.
00-04 is a (re)issue both nostalgic and new, familiar yet unknown, fresh out of the archive. It possesses the Low Light Dreams aural palette while offering a carefully curated array of never before heard icy-cold moods, soothing minimalism, and shyly optimistic melodies, all glazed with recently finalized additions.
FOANS — Atria
"Atria" is an easy-to-play-on-repeat work from Denver-based FOANS, a feat of heartbreaking melodic interludes and nostalgic, otherworldly softness. Originally self-released in 2014, this reissue remains a plunge into dubby textures, lamenting chords and cadence, and shimmering neon pads all organized into 9 tracks simply titled "Diorama". While growing to become a household name, especially for fans of 100% SILK and the now sadly defunct Danish label Speaker Footage, FOANS has offered numerous beloved releases over the last decade, always with his trademark sound. But "Atria" stands out; it is a remnant from his early years as a bedroom producer which shows us that FOANS' sound has always shimmered, has always moved through heavy emotions and uneasy silliness -- and will likely continue to do so for as long as he is pumping out music.
Perfect Location Records is honored to commit this stunning work to vinyl for the first time, with a brilliant digital remaster for digital collectors as well. The record is packaged in a black die-cut jacket and include a download code along with a small matte print of the acrylic-on-canvas cover art by painter Andrea Willems.
Cherushii — 3 EPs
A soul taken too soon and missed every day, Chelsea Faith aka Cherushii was a very close friend and musical comrade of ExHouse’s. That is why it has been a priority to keep her legacy alive. In 2022, PLR in close collaboration with the Cherushii’s family released Nobody’s Fool, Starlight Express, and Manic on vinyl for the first time as 3 EPs. Originally released on her Bandcamp in 2015 and 2016, these 3 EPs encompass the radiant love, fluent creativity, and unapologetic joviality of not only the musical world of Cherushii, but also the person behind the music. The hand-drawn artwork, which has become iconic of the Cherushii sound, are original creations by Cherushii’s sister, Sabrina. With this reissue, PLR offers a continuation of the same visual candy with a new front cover by Sabrina: the nudibranch pattern. Chosen by Sabrina after a dream visitation, the nudibranch is a curious, resilient creature which harnesses its profound coloration to flourish in the oceanic infinity. It can only do so, however, once it sheds its shell.
Perfect Collection
PLR’s Perfect Collection catalog started in 2018 and carried through to 2019. Meant to be listened to as an extended mixtape, Perfect Collection is a 24-release digital catalog hosting a variety of musical styles from both established and premiere producers. Its mission was to respectively help artists find a home for unreleased projects or complete a first-time release. All digital sales funded the seasonally themed four part vinyl series Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn (at top of page); one track from each digital release appears throughout the vinyl series.
